The Paper I I iMr'A I IVI/^A Monthly News University of North Carolina at Asheville I-/ 1^ V_^/\ Volume 2, Number 3, March 17, 1980 UNC-Asheville Planning For New Programs, Grad Center ENGINEERS FOR UNC-A Chancellor Highsmith (right) and Alice Wutschel, associate director of the Center for Continuing Education^ accepted a check for $500 for the university's scholarship fund from the Western North Carolina Chapter of the American In stitute of Industrial Engineers, Inc. The check was presented by Farrell White III of Beacon Manufacturing Co., president-elect of the chapter. Ken Howell, plant manager of Shadowline, at Mars Hill, and outgoing president of the chapter, joined the informal ceremony. The award is presented each year by the engineers for financial assistance to students interested in engineering or a related science field. It is given in memory of the late Merlin Wutschel, husband of Mrs. Wutschel and organizer of the WNC Chapter. Kudos And Other Stuff — From A Resident Critic By Michael Ochsenreiter, Student Editor The following is a grab bag (some have used the term “dog's breakfast" in describing similar endeavors built of bits and scraps) on the subject of cam pus life. Kudos are due the staff and writers of the Rag and Bone Shop for their re cent anniversary issue, a 32-page exer cise in journalism and creative writing of the first water. Its pages contained a gallimaufrey of articles and subjects to please most every literary palate. For those with a penchant for humor the article on Homecoming festivities by Christine Mann was a chuckler's delight from beginning to end. Speaking of ends, the tour of River side Cemetery as seen through the -Turn To Page Four- An “Asheville Graduate Center" on the UNC-A campus and more degree programs directed toward careers have been approved by the univer sity's Board of Trustees. If the Board of Governors for the University of North Carolina approves the Trustees' decision, UNC-A will have the green light to go ahead with plans for new degree programs in Computer Science,Communications, Accounting, Music and Religion, as well as two new specialty “tracks" in Management, two in Literature and a Master's degree in Management, Authorization to request the Grad Center and 10 other important addi tions to the academic program won the Trustees' unanimous endorsement at their quarterly meeting here March 6. The proposed amendments to the long-range plant for UNC-A were drawn up after a year-long study of educational needs in Asheville and Western North Carolina. They are concerned with the university's development between 1980 and 1985 and with continuing what Chancellor Highsmith called the “momentum of the past several years." The major step for UNC-A would be establishment of a comprehensive program of graduate studies to be call ed The Asheville Graduate Center of the University of North Carolina. It would be controlled by the general ad ministration of the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Degree pro grams would be offered by the par ticipating branches of the university system. UNC-Asheville would provide both the facilities and some members of its faculty for the project. In a statement prepared for the trustees' meeting.
